How to Pick the Right Wattage for Your Bathroom Heater
There is nothing worse than stepping out of a hot shower into a freezing bathroom. It kills the mood instantly. The biggest mistake I see people make is just grabbing whatever heater looks good and hoping for the best. They put a low-wattage lamp in a huge room, and then wonder why they’re still shivering ten minutes later. To get that “warm hug” feeling the second you turn it on, you have to match the power to the size of your space. Finding the right fit If you’ve got a tiny powder room (under 4 square meters), you don’t need a monster. A 400W to 600W lamp is plenty. It gives you a concentrated beam of heat that hits you immediately, without making the whole room feel like a sauna. For those mid-sized bathrooms—the 4 to 8 square meter range—you’ll probably want to bump it up to 800W or 1000W. Now, if you’re dealing with a massive master bath (over 10 square meters), one lamp just won’t cut it. You’ll end up with “cold spots” where you’re warm in one spot and freezing two feet away. In those cases, it’s better to use a few smaller units or a higher-wattage array. Just a heads-up: check your wiring. Higher wattage means more pull on your electrical circuit, and nobody wants to trip a breaker mid-shower. Where to put it Here is the thing about infrared heat: it doesn’t really “heat the air.” It heats whatever it touches. Your skin, your towel, the floor. Because of that, placement is everything. You want the lamp right above where you’ll actually be standing. Keep the height between 2.1 and 2.4 meters. If you mount it too high, the heat dissipates before it ever reaches you. Too low? You’re risking a nasty burn. The trade-off More wattage means you get warm faster. It’s great. But it also means your electricity bill might creep up, and the filaments in the bulb can wear out quicker if you’re constantly flicking it on and off. A simple trick to avoid this? Grab a timer or a smart controller. It handles the heavy lifting for you, so the heater only runs when you actually need it.
