
Can a simple lamp swap actually speed up your PET production?
If you’re running a small or mid-sized PET shop, you know the frustration of an old blow molding machine that just won’t hit its numbers. It feels like the machine is dragging its feet, and your cycle times are killing your margins. But before you go spending a fortune on a brand-new machine, take a look at your heating oven. Most of the time, that’s where the real bottleneck is. If your IR lamps are worn out, you’re wasting time. Swapping them for higher-density elements can shave seconds off your preheating phase and get your output moving again. The secret is in the heat density. To get those bottles moving faster, you need the PET preform to hit its glass transition temperature—quickly. We use shortwave infrared lamps because they actually dive into the plastic rather than just bouncing off the surface. Now, if you bump up the wattage per millimeter, you’re pushing more heat into the plastic. Some people move to 400V systems to get more power without tripping their breakers. But be careful. If you go too aggressive with the wattage, you’ll scorch the outside of the preform before the core even gets soft. It’s a balancing act. You have to tune the lamp power to match how fast your conveyor is moving. What are these things actually made of? We use high-purity quartz glass. Why? Because these lamps go through a brutal cycle of heating and cooling, and cheap glass would just shatter from the thermal shock. We also fill the tubes with halogen gas. This stops the filament from evaporating, which means the lamps actually last. For PET work, we use coated tubes. They act like a mirror, reflecting the heat forward onto the preform instead of letting it bleed out into the oven walls. And don’t worry about the installation. Most of our replacements use R7s or Sk15 connectors. You just pop them in. No need to rip out your sockets or rewire the whole housing. One thing to watch out for… Here’s the catch: when you put high-output lamps in, your oven gets a lot hotter. If your cooling fans are old or your ventilation is clogged, that extra heat has nowhere to go. The internals will bake, and your expensive new lamps will burn out way too soon. Do yourself a favor—check your airflow before you swap the tubes. Make sure the machine can breathe, and you’ll be set.
